Ventilation is not usually required with roof products, as this is managed mainly through windows, doors, and air bricks. If roof ventilation is required or preferred, a lantern with manual or remote-operated roof vents is recommended. Roof lights are fixed and cannot be opened.

Our roof products are easy to fit for individuals with DIY experience and for tradesmen. Roof lights are pre-glazed for installation, and roof lanterns include illustrated instructions with labelled, pre-cut parts. However, it is advisable to have an experienced person present during fitting.

Note that the product may require multiple people to lift heavy glass units, and safety measures should be observed when working at heights.

Yes, we offer marine-grade upgrades for customers living within 10 miles of the coast.

The best energy rating we offer is a roof lantern with 44mm triple glazing, achieving a U value as low as 0.6.

Clean the glass with a soft sponge and warm water with mild detergent. For areas with restricted access, we offer self-cleaning glass that has a coating to help remove dirt when rainwater hits it.

Planning permission is generally not required for roof lanterns or lights, considered permitted development if they meet certain criteria:

  • The roof lantern/light must not protrude more than 150mm from the roof plane.
  • It must not be higher than the highest part of the house roof.
  • Any side-facing windows must be obscure glazed with openings at least 1.7m above the floor.

Always check with your local authority, especially in conservation areas or for listed buildings.

New builds and extensions need building regulations consent and must meet current minimum standards. Additional accreditations may be required depending on your architect or local authority’s specifications.

Lean-to roofs are not in our standard range but are available on special request. For details, refer to our Atlas brochure or contact our sales team for a quote.

We default to A-rated glass. Available options:

  • Celsius Elite: Blue tint, self-cleaning, high energy efficiency.
  • Self-Cleaning Clear: Clear glass with self-cleaning coating.
  • Self-Cleaning Blue: Blue tint with self-cleaning coating.
  • Self-Cleaning Neutral: Neutral tint with self-cleaning coating.
  • Self-Cleaning Blue 44mm Triple Glazed: Blue tint, 44mm triple glazing for better energy rating.
  • Self-Cleaning Neutral 44mm Triple Glazed: Neutral tint, 44mm triple glazing.

We use industry-leading brands that ensure high quality and reliability, especially important for roof lanterns and lights. Our products are known for strength and ease of installation, with all parts clearly labelled and with illustrated instructions.

Contemporary: No roof bars between the four panes, ideal for maximum glass area but limited to 1500mm width and 3m length.

Regular: Traditional style with roof bars, allows for larger sizes up to 4m width and 3m length.

Maximum size is 1400mm in width and 6m in length.

Regular roof lanterns are available up to 4m width and 3m length; contemporary styles up to 1500mm width and 3m length.

The 80mm kerb width suits our lantern profile, allowing plasterboard to fit flush for a clean finish.

Tie bars support larger roofs, tying rafters to prevent excess load. Requirements are based on roof size:

  • Up to 2.5m wide: No tie bars.
  • Up to 3.8m: Hidden tie bar.
  • Up to 5m: Rafter tie bar (depending on design).

Orders for roof lanterns include a technical CAD drawing for approval; usually not required for roof lights.

Standard pitches: 25° for lanterns, 5° for roof lights. Custom pitches available upon request.

Yes, options include manual or electronic operation with remote control or wall switch.

Both offer natural light. Rooflights are subtle, cheaper, but non-opening. Lanterns can be a central feature and can include roof vents. Choose based on style, cost, and ventilation needs.

Yes, skylight is the American term. Our roof lights are flat and non-opening, sitting at a slight pitch.

The Atlas roof lantern is strong with low sight-lines and slim roof bars, providing a contemporary look. Roof products enhance light and space, ideal for single-storey extensions.

Step 1 - External kerb

The essential measurement is the external kerb, as shown in the above diagram. Looking at the base (or kerb) that the lantern is going to be fitted to, this outside measurement is the one that we need on both length and width.

Step 2 - To Note

The kerb is typically built out of timber, and the ideal width is 80mm. Please note the absolute minimum kerb width is 67mm.

Why Are Korniche Roof Lanterns So Popular?

Flat Glass is a brand new product for 2024 from the award winning team at Korniche. Designed and developed by engineers with the homeowner in mind, Flat Glass is set to redefine the rule book when it comes to skylights. Many skylights or flat roof glass products on the market are nothing more than a bonded sheet of glass, meaning they are weak in many areas such as security and potential leaks. It also means that if the glass unit fails at any point, the whole unit is defunct and must be replaced, which will probably damage internal decor in the process. The Flat Glass product solves this by being the first re-glazeable skylight - watch the video above for more information.

Can Be Re-Glazed

Korniche Flat Glass is the first re-glazeable aluminium roof light on the market. This is a benefit as other glass alternatives must be replaced if the glass fails or is damaged. Many roof glass products on the market are simply a bonded glass unit, which means they are only secured to the upstand with a bead of silicone. This can be a weakness in terms of security and water ingress, and means if the unit ever gets damaged or develops a fault, the whole thing must be replaced.
