What is the process for changing a door?

Changing a door involves positioning the frame, securing it with fixings, aligning it properly, and sealing the edges for weatherproofing and smooth operation.

Replacing a door can seem like a daunting task, but it’s a straightforward process when you know what to expect. Whether you’re upgrading your exterior door for better energy efficiency or simply refreshing your home’s look, understanding the steps involved is key to getting the perfect finish.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about changing a door, from preparation to installation, ensuring you feel confident and informed every step of the way.

What’s Covered in This Guide?

Signs It’s Time to Change Your Door

Not sure if your door needs replacing? Here are the key signs to look out for:

Visible Damage

Cracks, chips, or warping can compromise your door’s security and insulation. Damaged doors not only look unsightly but may also allow drafts and moisture to enter your home.

Drafts and Poor Insulation

If you notice cold air coming through your door even when it’s closed, it may be time for an upgrade. Modern doors are designed with better insulation, helping to reduce energy bills and keep your home comfortable.

Difficulty in Operation

A door that sticks, creaks, or struggles to close properly can indicate wear and tear. This often leads to further damage, making replacement the most practical solution.

Outdated Design

Your front door plays a big role in your home’s kerb appeal. If your door looks out of place or feels outdated, replacing it with a stylish, modern option can transform your home’s exterior.

Security Concerns

An older door with outdated locks may leave your home vulnerable. Replacing it with a modern door featuring advanced locking mechanisms offers better security and peace of mind.

Weather Damage

Doors are exposed to harsh elements, and over time, rain, wind, and sunlight can cause peeling, swelling, or warping. A durable, weather-resistant replacement ensures long-lasting performance.

Changing a door: What tools do you need?

Before starting, ensure you have the following tools:

  • Measuring tape and spirit level
  • Electric drill and bits
  • Hammer and chisel
  • Saw and rubber mallet
  • Screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead)
  • Fixings: Plastic-sheathed frame fixing screws (minimum size 8x100mm)
  • Silicone sealant and applicator gun
  • Safety gear (gloves, goggles)

Having everything on hand ensures a smoother process and fewer interruptions.

How to Change a Door: Step-by-Step Guide

1. Carefully Position the Frame

  • Place the frame in the opening, ensuring it’s square and plumb in all planes. Use packers to adjust and stabilise the frame.

2. Clearly Mark Fixing Points

  • Mark fixing points 150mm–250mm from each corner and no more than 600mm apart for intermediate fixings. For frames with transoms, position fixings 150mm–250mm from the transom centreline.

3. Align the Frame

  • Double-check alignment with a spirit level. Adjust packers as needed to keep the frame square.

4. Drill and Secure

  • Drill holes into the brickwork (not mortar) at the marked positions. Next, insert and tighten plastic-sheathed fixing screws to secure the frame, taking care not to over-tighten and distort the frame.

5. Seal and Finish

  • Apply silicone sealant around the frame’s perimeter for weatherproofing.
  • Test the door for proper operation and locking functionality.
